Cement Companies Refuse to Roll Back Price Hike

Cement manufacturers in South India have refused to roll back recent price hikes, citing the sharp increase in input costs. They also conveyed the decision to the governments of Telangana & Andhra Pradesh.

Representatives of regional cement manufacturers, including India Cements, My Home Cements, Sagar Cements, Parashakthi, NCL & Bhavya Cements, addressed the media in Hyderabad on Monday a fortnight after builders said they would stop cement purchases. Top executives of cement producers refuted allegations, levelled against them by the builders, of cartelisation to increase cement prices about Rs. 320 a bag. They saidly 50% to ` steep increase in input costs like coal, power and transportation crippled the ce ment industry where at least half of them were incurring heavy losses.

Sagar Cements' Executive Director S Anand Reddy said cement prices across the Rs 300 a bag. country were over ` “While some cement companies were shut down in both Telangana & Andhra Pradesh, there are at least 3 to 4 companies up for sale. Passing on the burden to the customers was the only option left.“
