About 55% smokers do not own a Health Insurance policy

About 55% smokers do not own a Health Insurance policy

World No Tobacco Day,  May 31.

ICICI Lombard Survey “What’s your stand on smoking?”

·         80% respondents exposed to passive smoking regularly with 53% of them on a daily basis

·         Nearly half the survey universe felt smoking is too addictive a habit to quit

·        57% smokers do not own a Health Insurance policy

Even as the debate over the size of warnings on cigarette packets continues to evoke strong reactions, smokers seem to have made up their mind  an overwhelming 72% of respondents say that pictoral warnings or plain packaging would have little impact on their habit.

Also, only 24% the respondents polled stated that increase in ‘sin taxes’ would compel smokers to give up the habit with 41% of them saying that a stricter imposition on banning smoking in public places would be widely appreciated.

The above, among other significant findings, are part of an ICICI Lombard survey “What’s your stand on smoking?” released today ahead of the ‘World No Tobacco Day’. To highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and generate awareness, the WHO commemorates World No Tobacco Day on May 31. “Get ready for plain packaging” is the theme set for this year’s campaign. It is worrisome to note then that 53% of the respondents polled stated that they are exposed to some part of passive smoking on a daily basis with a higher percentage (80%) getting exposed at least once a week

Work-related stress (35%) and peer-pressure (38%) were among the chief reasons for people to take up smoking with 49% of the respondents stating it has become a habit hard to quit. Though a small percentage, but it is worth stating that 20% of the respondents felt that smoking is ‘just another habit’ which in moderation should not cause any problems.

Sanjay Datta, Chief-Underwriting,
Claims & Reinsurance,
ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd.

Commenting on the Survey, Mr. Sanjay Datta, Chief-Underwriting, Claims & Reinsurance, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd. said, "The ICICI Lombard survey reveals interesting insights but most significantly it underscores the fact that the fight against smoking is far from over.
One of the most alarming findings of the survey was that only 10% of the respondents felt the need to buy a health insurance policy as a measure to combat the problem. It thereby emphasizes that as insurers and as a society, we are yet a long way away from spreading full awareness about the ill-effects of smoking.”
57% of the survey participants stated that they do not hold a health Insurance policy while 77% of those who had a policy said that they own a regular health insurance policy as against a specialized policy with critical illness or one with high deductibles.
ICICI Lombard conducted the national wide survey in the age group 22-45 to which they received over 1000 responses.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. ·        Sri. K. Y. Nayak, Director of Employment & Training, Telangana
·        Mr. B Padmanabha, Vice President – Customer Service Group, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd

In an endeavour to bridge the gap between industry requirement and the need for skilled labour, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has already established a General Training T-TEP, at Hyderabad, in association with HEH The Nizam & Alladin Technical Institute -Industrial Training Centre.

T-TEP, a special training module in which Toyota has tied up with industrial training institutes, was launched in 2006 in India. The program aims at providing technical know-how training to IT students across India along with providing hands on real time experience within Toyota dealerships.

After a span of 10 years, TTEP is now associated with 46 training institutes under the program.

In its first year, the program was implemented in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hubli. The program was subsequently introduced in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Lalru, Pune, Cochin, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Ghaziabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Indore, Vizag, Ludhiana, Cuttack, Haldwani, Nalbari, Gurgaon, Satara , Paramakudi , Chalakudy, Mangaluru, Calicut & Nashik.

Till now around 4594 students are trained under this training program and 65% have been offered employment opportunities at Toyota Dealerships across India.  This is the third T-TEP in Andhra Pradesh, including two institutes in Hyderabad and Vizag established in the years 2007 and 2011 respectively. Till date, a total of 385 students have been trained by TKM through this program from the state, of which 75% have been recruited.

With this program, Toyota Kirloskar Motor intends to enhance the technical abilities and employability of Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students in the age group of 16 to 18 years. The program will benefit ITIs in building skilful technicians for the Indian automotive repair industry. The current automobile repair industry is characterised by inadequately skilled manpower and lack of professional training for repair and diagnostics. T-TEP is a unique initiative undertaken by TKM, in partnership with ITIs and its dealer partners across India to address this issue.

The event marked the Launch of Body & Paint TTEP Program. The BP T-TEP training syllabus imparts training on basic body and paint repair skills in addition to dealer specific requirements to students, thereby improving their knowledge of repair techniques and facilitating the adoption of latest technology in Body & Paint. Currently Body & Paint technicians have limited information and hands on experience in the usage of correct repair operations and techniques, forcing dealers to recruit manpower from local garages. Toyota along with its supplier partners, Axalta Coating Systems India Pvt Ltd and 3M, will provide all necessary support to the institute i.e. training consumables, visiting faculty, training material, tools, equipments etc. Introduced in the year 2009, Automotive Body & Paint repair training has been provided to more than 1200 students till now.

Commenting on the occasion Mr. B Padmanabha Vice President – Customer Service Group, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd said, “Over the span of 10 years we have successfully managed to implement our T-TEP program in 419 institutes across 53 countries. In India, we have established successful association with 46 institutes across cities under the TTEP program. It is in line with Government’s ‘Skill India’ program helping bridge the gap that lies in the availability of highly skilled workforce to match up with India’s rapidly growing industrial sector.  With these T-TEP launches we are further reinstating our objective to carve out opportunities for talented students from the rural areas and make them more employable for the Indian automobile industry. As we reach out to other ITIs in the coming years, we wish to contribute towards a marked increase in the availability of skilled manpower in the Indian automobile repair industry. We are committed to provide the best to the students, which will eventually benefit the industry on the whole”

“The special course of Body & Paint Technician is designed keeping in mind the advanced technology required for the Automobile Market. We thrive to give best to the students who will eventually contribute to the growing Automobile Market and Service Industry” he added

The BP T-TEP, a 1 year syllabus, introduces students to Toyota’s advanced technology and service techniques. It also includes, on-the-job training, at Toyota’s dealerships. As a part of this program, TKM will also train institute instructors in the latest technology, used at Toyota and the automobile industry.

TKM plans to introduce this program to technical institutes across the country in the coming years and reach out to over 1000 students per year. The project is jointly funded by Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Kirloskar Motor. Together they provide T-TEP institutes with hi-tech training packages and Toyota service training manuals and materials. Axalta Coating Systems India Pvt Ltd & 3M India Ltd, have also extended their support by providing latest equipments and material required for training

T-TEP supports Toyota’s comprehensive human resource development system that extends from training at T-TEP institutes to recruitment and development at Toyota dealerships.

T-TEP is widely recognized across the globe for its effectiveness. The program has been successfully introduced in 419 institutes across 53 countries by Toyota, which includes USA, Australia, Italy, South Africa, China, Vietnam and India.
