World Brain Tumour Day 8 June

World Brain Tumour Day  8 June

In order to increase awareness around brain tumors 8th June is celebrated as the World Brain Tumor day. This day, emphasis is laid on understanding the causes, symptoms and preventive measures for brain tumors.

As insurers, we receive claims related to all kinds of diseases, and brain tumors are a growing reason for claims, across both metro and tier II/III cities. Because of low awareness, people often confuse brain tumor with brain cancer; but not all brain tumors are cancerous. Any abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells in the brain results in a brain tumor.

Surprisingly, the incidence of brain tumors is on the rise in India. Here are a few internally observed trends:

·         There has been a 40% increase in the number of claims due to brain tumor between 2016 to 2019
·         In the same time period, there has been a 25% increase in the average claim size due to brain tumor and is around Rs. 3,00,000/-
·         The maximum number of cases arise from Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Gurgaon

·         More male claimants as compared to female claimants
·         Close to 70% of the claimants were covered under GMC policies, as against individual health insurance policies.
·         The average age of claimants is in the range of 40-45.
·         Tier II/III cities such as Vadodara, Surat, Jaipur, Indore, Chandigarh, Raipur, Mysore, Mangalore also reported a rise in claims due to brain tumor
·         There has been a significant rise in claims from the states of Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Rajasthan

Commenting on the occasion of “World Brain Tumor Day”, Mr Gurdeep Singh Batra, Head - Retail Underwriting, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance said that “Though the average claim size that we receive is around Rs. 3,00,000/- we have seen several cases where the hospitalization expenses run into more than 10 lakh rupees. Since 70% of claimants are covered under a Group Medi-Claim policies, selecting an adequate coverage either under your employer sponsored health insurance or under your individual health insurance is hence of utmost importance. For this we suggest that your basic health insurance policy should offer you a minimum of 5 lakh rupee coverage, and you can top it up with a 10 lakh Super Top UP policy. Not only would this give you an adequate coverage but it would also be an economically viable option – an apt financial shield against any health exigency.”
